The Cancer Survivor’s Garden Companion — In Bookstores Today!

Happy birthday to my book! The Cancer Survivor's Garden Companion is available in bookstores today! Cover of The Cancer Survivor's Garden Companion I have seen firsthand the power of the garden and natural world to balance, heal and cultivate hope, so I couldn't be more honored to join this conversation about the relationship between gardening and wellness! Whether you are a cancer survivor, or have another illness, chronic pain, depression or are simply over-stressed, this book can help you find that balance and peace you are looking for. My yoga deck with surrounding tropical garden My yoga deck was the site of much of my healing as I recovered from treatment for breast cancer. Diagnosed in May 2012, I completed treatment just before New Year's that same year. "Hooray!" I thought, "Life is back to normal now." I couldn't have been more wrong. Months of instability while I attempted to regain my sense of balance and health after chemotherapy and radiation (not to mention a full lymph node dissection which lead to lymphedema and chronic issues in my left arm) left me feeling depressed and disengaged from life. Every day seemed to be a struggle for me. Then my fiancé Brett (aka The Hunky Foreman) built this yoga deck for my 50th birthday because he wanted me to get out and enjoy life and become healthy again. It's what began to turn me -- and my life and my health -- around. Jenny with black cat in her friend Kylee's garden You don't have to have a magazine-worthy garden to reap the wellness benefits -- mine isn't! Parts of my garden are beautiful and other parts are embarrassing eyesores, but it's okay. It's my garden, and it's there for me. I encourage each one of you to view your gardens and the natural world as resources for creating a healthy life, whether you live in an apartment with a balcony, a trailer, or expansive property -- let the outdoors keep you balanced and hopeful. I hope none of you gets a cancer diagnosis -- but I know some of you will. Some already have. Whatever you are going through in life, I hope this book can help you see the treasure that is just outside your door. Your garden is your companion for healing and hope. The Cancer Survivor's Garden Companion: Cultivating Hope, Healing & Joy in the Ground Beneath Your Feet is available in bookstores beginning today -- check your local Barnes & Noble or favorite independent book store, and if you don't see it there, simply request it! It will also be available at various treatment centers across the nation -- and it would be a perfect addition to your oncologist's waiting room. I was delighted when I received a message a month or two ago from someone who had preordered it on Amazon as a gift for her local treatment center. Together, we can help each other find that hope and happiness again -- because life can certainly be difficult and messy, but it's also beautiful. And our gardens are the best teachers of this. May 2016 be your best year for wellness -- let your garden lead the way!

Will you be making personal appearances to promote your book? Anything in the Tulsa, OK area?

Hi Mary! Yes, I am planning speaking engagements all over the country this year — I don’t have anything currently booked for Tulsa, but I’d be happy to come if there was a group that was interested. You or an interested party can email me at j_peterson63@yahoo.com. Thank you!

Great book! Common-sense, intuitive, hopeful. Helps me realize I can call myself a gardener despite slap-dash gardening ability because of my desire–NEED!–to spend time outdoors daily.

Stage 3, endometrial cancer. After surgery and radiation, only 3 more Taxol/carbo infusions to go!
