Breast Cancer Research — My Book is Donating!

Donation for Breast Cancer Research

I am really excited to announce that I will be donating 10% of my proceeds from “The Cancer Survivor’s Garden Companion: Cultivating Hope, Healing & Joy in the Ground Beneath Your Feet” to research for metastatic breast cancer! And YOU can help raise these funds for breast cancer research, too.

The Cancer Survivor's Garden Companion helps breast cancer research

For as long as my book is in print I will donate 10% of my proceeds to Komen Austin to a designated fund for research for metastatic breast cancer. Forever and ever. No expiration date. No question.

Metastatic Breast Cancer

So, what is metastatic breast cancer?

  • Metastatic breast cancer means that the cancer has spread from the breast to other parts of the body (typically lungs, bones, brain, and liver).
  • This is still breast cancer — even though it’s in the liver or bones.
  • People with this diagnosis are considered Stage IV.
  • There is no cure for this.
  • People with this diagnosis will be in treatment for the rest of their lives.
  • People with this diagnosis on the average live up to 2 years.
  • Early stage breast cancers (Stages I – III) can be rediagnosed years later as Stage IV. Early detection does not always mean a cure once and for all.

This is near and dear to my heart because my mother, Sue, died of metastatic breast cancer when she was 60. I was 26. She was diagnosed 10 years prior at an earlier stage, and then her cancer came back and spread like wildfire.

I was diagnosed at age 49 in 2012 with Stage II-A breast cancer. The odds are good that I will not get this cancer back, but I live with the fact that 20 – 30% of all women diagnosed at an earlier stage will be rediagnosed with Stage IV later on. I know this could be me, but I don’t focus on that daily.

I want to focus on living a healthy life, regardless of my diagnosis. I want to focus on joy, on the people I love, on balance, and on hope. This is why I wrote ” The Cancer Survivor’s Garden Companion” — to help people going through really tough times to use their gardens as places of hope and healing.

Every purchase of this book can help fund Stage IV breast cancer research. Every time I get a royalty check from my publisher, 10% will go in a check to Susan G. Komen Austin in a dedicated fund for research for metastatic breast cancer. This means the donation cannot be used for anything but research, and I am so grateful that Komen Austin has made gifts like this possible. I chose Komen Austin because they supported me before my diagnosis by funding $15,000 of my biopsies, and I will always look for ways to give back.

Jenny & Brett at Komen Austin's Mad for Pink Gala

I was honored to be the keynote speaker at Komen Austin’s 2016 Mad for Pink Gala — my fiance Brett and I loved getting dressed up for a good cause!

Please join me in raising funds for research — until we have a cure, we can work together to make sure everyone diagnosed with this disease gets the care they need. And until then, please get out into the garden — grow some food, smell some flowers, feel the breeze and sunshine on your face, and let Nature do its thing.

Because we go around this planet but one time, and Nature shows us how to do it joyfully.
